Description

This lot comprises two antique copper coal scuttles, including one helmet-shaped hod and one pedestal base example. Both items are constructed from hammered copper sheets featuring visible brazed and riveted seams. The helmet-shaped scuttle (left) features a wide pouring spout, a heavy copper swing handle with brass or bronze mounts, and a fixed sculptural scroll handle at the rear. The pedestal base scuttle (right) is of rounded, globular form mounted on a flared copper base. It is fitted with ornate cast metal handle mounts, possibly in a neoclassical style, supporting a main swing handle and a smaller rear handle, both featuring turned wooden grips. The interiors of both vessels show evidence of original use with dark tarnish and verdigris. No manufacturer’s marks or hallmarks are visible on either piece.

Condition report:

The helmet-shaped scuttle exhibits significant surface oxidation, pitting, and dark spotting across the exterior (photo 1). There are several small dents to the lower body, and the base rim shows unevenness and wear (photo 1). The interior has a heavy accumulation of soot. The pedestal scuttle shows a prominent horizontal brazed seam around the mid-section, which has a heavy solder line (photo 4). This item has a notable dent on the left side of the globular body (photo 4). The turned wooden handles exhibit significant wear, with the original finish mostly worn away to reveal pale wood (photo 2). Both items show scattered surface scratches and dark spots consistent with domestic use.
