Lot 54:
Description
This lot comprises two ceramic figurines depicting Hereford bulls, featuring the breed’s characteristic deep mahogany-brown coat and white markings. The larger figurine is fashioned as a butcher’s shop display model with a textured, curly-effect glaze to the body. It is fitted with a black leather style head collar and a metal nose ring connected to a brass coloured lead chain with a black handle. The underside of the hooves are fitted with four unglazed, brown felt-covered pads; no maker’s name is readable on this piece. The smaller figurine features a similar mahogany and white glaze. The underside of this smaller bull bears a printed black mark reading MADE IN ENGLAND. Both figures are naturalistically modelled with detailed features and painted hooves.
Length: 38 cm (larger bull)
Height: 24 cm (larger bull)
Length: 19 cm (smaller bull).
Condition report:
Both figurines appear to be in good overall condition. The larger bull exhibits fine mesh crazing to the white glaze on the head and underside (photo 6). The leather style harness and brass coloured chain are intact. The smaller bull has two circular vent holes to the underside of the hooves (photo 9). No chips, cracks, or repairs are visible in the provided images.
