Lot 18:
Description
This lot comprises three mechanical mantel clocks and one pyramid style rotary dial telephone. Two of the clocks feature dark brown Bakelite cases with silvered analog dials and Arabic numerals; one is clearly marked “SMITHS ENFIELD” on the dial, while the other’s dial is blank. The third, smaller clock is housed in a matching arched Bakelite case with a white dial and gold-tone bezel, marked “SMITHS”. All three clocks are constructed with rear hinged doors revealing spring-driven mechanical movements and spiral gong rods for striking. The internal brass movements of two units are stamped with “SMITHS MADE IN ENGLAND”. The lot includes a black Bakelite GPO style 300-series type telephone with a chrome-trimmed rotary dial and a braided handset cord. The telephone is fitted with a contemporary black plastic cord terminating in a UK BS 1363 3-pin plug.
Condition report:
The Bakelite cabinets on all three clocks show surface dust, scuffs, and minor scratches consistent with age. One clock is missing its hands and has two vacant winding holes on the dial (photo 1). Internal inspection reveals oxidation and rust on the spiral gongs and various metal components (photo 4 and 5). One movement appears to be missing a pendulum or balance component (photo 4). The telephone handset is present, though the Bakelite body exhibits surface dullness and light scratches (photo 2). The rotary dial is missing its central numeric instruction card (photo 2). The braided cord shows visible wear and fraying at the connection points (photo 2). Functional status is unknown; no winding keys are present.
