Lot 17:
Description
A pair of large hand carved hardwood African elephant figurines. These figures are constructed from a dark-stained tropical hardwood, possibly ebony or teak, and are depicted in naturalistic walking poses. The first figure is carved with its head lowered and trunk curled downwards, while the second figure is depicted with a raised trunk and slightly turned head. Both elephants feature large carved ears and anatomical detailing to the heads and bodies. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on either carving. The figures are finished with a smooth polish that highlights the grain of the wood.
Height of first figure: 35.5 cm
Height of second figure: 36.2 cm.
Condition report:
Both figures show signs of age and wear. The first elephant (photo 3) displays several vertical drying cracks (checks) along the flank and rear, which are inherent to the solid wood construction. The second elephant (photo 2) has a notable wood chip and loss to the lower edge of its right ear and is missing its left tusk. The right tusk on this figure is present but exhibits surface wear and is made from a light-coloured material, possibly bone. There are additional surface abrasions and small losses around the trunk and mouth area of the second figure (photo 1).
