Lot 53:
Description
A large earthenware jug celebrating the literary works of Charles Dickens, featuring high-relief molded decoration. The bulbous body is densely populated with caricatures of various Dickensian characters, and the handle is modelled as a figure wearing a green coat and black hat. The spout is formed from a large molded face wreathed in green foliage. The piece is finished in a multi-coloured high-gloss glaze, primarily in shades of brown, green, and tan, with an orange-tan interior.
The underside of the base bears a printed black backstamp featuring a lion atop a crown symbol above the words MADE IN ENGLAND and ROYAL DOULTON in a circular arrangement, flanked by the words TRADE MARK. Below this is the title Dickens Jug and a header reading List of Characters— followed by three columns of names enclosed within a scroll-like border. Readable characters in the scroll include Poor Joe, Little Nell, Mr. Pickwick, Sam Weller, Bill Sikes, Fagin, and David Copperfield. The base is also marked with the printed registration number REG NO 771321 and an impressed number 13.
Height: 27 cm.
Condition report:
The jug is in good overall condition with no visible chips, cracks, or evidence of professional repair. The glaze remains bright and lustrous throughout. Fine age-related crazing is visible to the glaze on the base (photo 6) and is consistent with earthenware of this period. The interior appears clean and free from significant staining.
