Description

This lot comprises two vintage metal milk churns, each featuring hand-painted decorative scenes. The first churn is a heavy metal vessel with twin handles and a locking lid mechanism secured by a purple painted bar. Its exterior is decorated with an atmospheric, thick-impasto landscape depicting a French style chateau or farmstead under a dramatic cloudy sky, with a cow grazing in the foreground. The shoulder of this churn bears the embossed digits 6 6 8 8. The second, taller churn features a flared open rim and two side handles. It is decorated with a detailed farmyard barn scene including a black and white cow, a rabbit, and a piglet amongst straw and overhanging foliage. The reverse is finished in a solid peach or buff colour. A handwritten signature in black ink or paint reading Di Lalla is located near the base at the rear. Both churns exhibit metal construction with areas of exposed copper-coloured plating or paint.

Condition report:

Both churns show visible signs of age and outdoor use. The smaller churn with lid exhibits significant surface rust, pitting, and oxidation around the base rim and lower body (photo 1). There is heavy oxidation and white paint splatter to the lid and locking mechanism (photo 3). The taller churn shows various scuffs, scratches, and minor paint losses to the decorative finish, along with dark surface marks on the buff-coloured reverse (photo 2). Both interiors show internal rust and wear consistent with age. Height: 53 cm (smaller churn to lid top) Height: 63 cm (taller churn)
