Description

A Persian Tribal style hand-knotted wool rug, featuring a vibrant red field decorated with three vertically stacked stepped medallions in blue and ochre. The medallions are intricately filled with geometric star and cruciform motifs, surrounded by various tribal filler elements including stylised floral and animal-like geometric shapes. The composition is enclosed within a multi-layered border, featuring a primary brown-ground border decorated with serrated leaf and wine-glass motifs. The rug is constructed with a wool pile on a wool or cotton foundation and is finished with ivory-coloured cotton fringes at both ends. The reverse of the rug bears a pinned fabric tag which is stamped with the characters STYLE, followed by the numbers 384 and 16/29. A separate section of the same tag is stamped with the number 77616.

Length: 56 inches (edge to edge, including fringe).
Width: 37 inches (edge to edge).

Condition report:

The rug shows significant signs of wear and age consistent with use. There is substantial wear to the wool pile across the field, with several areas showing the underlying foundation (photo 1). The side bindings (selvages) are worn with visible loosening of threads (photo 2). Both ends exhibit heavy fraying and significant loss to the cotton fringes (photo 3 and photo 5). There is general surface soiling and fading throughout, along with small localised stains within the red field (photo 4).
