Description

A collection of three antique style wooden tool chests, each constructed from pine and finished with black paint. The assortment includes various specialist woodworking and metalworking hand tools. The first chest features white stencilled lettering to the side reading C. FRY JOINER and contains an internal removable wooden tray. Inside are several metal rasps and files with turned wooden handles, a wire brush, and various workshop cloths. The second, larger chest is marked C. FRY and houses a group of wooden moulding planes, a wooden-handled back saw, and a coping saw. The third chest bears the stencilled inscription F. FRY E.M.D. to the lower front. Its contents include large wooden bench planes, a marking gauge, a wooden mallet, and coiled rope. All three chests are fitted with iron carrying handles and hinges. One small yellow rectangular label is visible inside one chest reading 7, and a purple paper label on a coil of rope reads 12.5 metres.

Condition report:

The collection is in heavily used workshop condition. All three wooden chests show significant surface wear, including extensive paint loss, scuffs, and deep scratches to the lids and sides (photos 5 and 6). The iron hardware, including handles and hinges, exhibits heavy surface corrosion and rust (photo 4). The internal wooden trays and the chests\' interiors show staining and accumulated workshop dust. The wooden tool bodies, particularly the planes, show wear, chips to the edges, and dark staining from use (photo 2). Metal tool components, such as saw blades and plane irons, show varying degrees of surface oxidation, pitting, and rust (photo 3).
