Lot 402:
Sold for: £9
Description
A collection of eleven printed metal advertising and novelty signs, primarily featuring Elvis Presley memorabilia and humorous themes. The group includes five signs related to Elvis Presley: a vertical rectangular portrait with a printed signature and the text ‘I never expected to be anybody important’; a horizontal rectangular sign for the film ‘Jailhouse Rock’; a stylized blue-tinted portrait; and two black and white signs from ‘THE WERTHEIMER COLLECTION – 1956’, one depicting the artist on a bus and another on a motorcycle.
The assortment also contains six novelty items: a ‘The Cock Inn Free House’ sign featuring a rooster; a chicken-themed sign with the text ‘I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road…’; a yellow ‘Gin & Tonic Liquid Sanity’ sign; a ‘Rusty Nuts Fix-IT Shop’ sign featuring a squirrel; a small yellow warning sign regarding ‘the light at the end of the tunnel’; and a small white sign regarding ‘Arguing with a Woman’. A shaped black and white sign for ‘JACK DANIEL’S Old No. 7 BRAND’ completes the lot. The signs are constructed from thin sheet metal with printed faux-rust effects to the edges and corners to simulate an aged appearance.
Condition report:
The collection is in generally good decorative condition. The rust-coloured staining visible around the edges and corners across all items (photos 1-4) is a deliberate part of the printed graphic design rather than structural corrosion. Minor surface scratches and slight bends to the corners are visible on several plates (photo 1). No significant fading or physical structural damage is evident.
