Lot 342:
Sold for: £9
Description
A Neo-Renaissance style coal or kindling box constructed from wood and clad in embossed brass sheeting. The box features highly detailed repoussé panels depicting 17th-century style domestic and tavern scenes, including figures gathered around a table with a barrel and a seated couple being served in a room with leaded glass windows. These central scenes are framed by decorative borders of grapevine and leaf motifs. The box is fitted with a hinged lid and rests on four small metal casters at the base. Internally, it contains a removable galvanized metal liner with two integrated handle loops. Accompanying the box is a separate wrought iron pedestal stand with scrolled tripod feet, supporting a shallow circular metal dish with a crimped rim. No maker’s marks, signatures, or hallmarks are visible on the brass cladding, wooden frame, or ironwork. A partial newspaper dated Sunday 13 February is present inside the liner, featuring an advertisement for Harrods.
Condition report:
The brass cladding shows heavy tarnish and oxidation throughout, with a significant area of surface finish loss to the upper right corner of the front panel (photo 4). The wooden frame exhibits wear and rounding to the corners and edges. The galvanized metal liner shows surface oxidation and general wear consistent with use (photo 2). One caster at the base appears slightly misaligned or worn (photo 4). The wrought iron stand displays surface rust, and the black-painted dish has significant pitting and paint loss to the interior surface (photo 5).
