Lot 283:
Description
A Victorian style twin pedestal desk constructed from pine and oak with a dark-stained oak coloured finish. The desk is built in three sections, comprising a rectangular top and two independent pedestals. The top section contains three frieze oak fronted drawers, with the central drawer featuring an internal vertical divider. Each pedestal contains three graduated drawers, all fitted with turned wooden mushroom-style knobs. The inset writing surface is finished in brown leather. The drawer construction utilised simple box joints, and a longitudinal split is visible in the base of the central frieze drawer. Several inset metal keyholes are present across the drawer fronts, and a metal lock mechanism is visible on the side of one open drawer; however, no keys are included with this lot. The desk stands on two solid plinth bases. No maker’s marks, stamps, or labels were observed during inspection.
Condition report:
The desk is in used condition with visible wear throughout. The dark-stained finish shows significant loss, scratching, and staining across the pedestals and drawer fronts (photo 1 and 2). The brown leather writing surface is heavily worn with prominent surface cracking, abrasions, and creasing (photo 7). A significant longitudinal split is visible in the wooden bottom of the central frieze drawer (photo 3). One wooden drawer knob is missing from the bottom right pedestal drawer (photo 1). The plinth bases show typical scuffing and indentations consistent with historical use (photo 1).
