Description

A set of four Windsor style chairs manufactured by Ercol in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. The set comprises four armchairs, all constructed with solid elm saddle seats and steam-bent beech wood components. They feature a continuous hoop back that extends to form the armrests, supported by splayed spindles. All four chairs are built using traditional wedge-jointed construction, with the dowel ends of the legs and back spindles visible through the seat tops. Two armchairs carry a circular gold-toned adhesive foil label reading BUCKINGHAMSHIRE ENGLAND, MADE IN HIGH WYCOMBE, and featuring the ERCOL logo with a stylized lion and the numbers 365 A and 1979. The other two chairs bear a smaller rectangular blue and silver adhesive foil label reading MADE IN ERCOL ENGLAND and stamped 1960.

Condition report:

The chairs exhibit general wear consistent with age, including surface scratches, scuffs, and some finish loss across the wood surfaces. One armchair has a significant structural crack through the steam-bent hoop back and armrest (photo 5 and 6). Dark water marks or stains are visible on the surfaces of several elm seats (photo 5). The blue foil label on one chair is partially worn and lifting at the edges (photo 4).
