Lot 226:
Sold for: £16
Description
A Rococo Revival style wall mirror featuring an oval mirror plate set within an ornate cast composite frame. The frame is finished in a metallic gold and bronze-toned gilding and is decorated with asymmetrical C-scrolls, foliate motifs, and a prominent shell or rocaille crest at the top and bottom. The reverse of the mirror is fitted with a hardboard backing board, which is secured to the frame with small strips of adhesive tape. A metal hanging chain is attached to the reverse with two ring-eye fixings. No manufacturer marks, labels, or signatures are visible on the frame or the backing. This lot comprises the mirror only; the storage units, fan, and other background items shown in the images are not included.
Condition report:
The mirror plate appears to be in good overall condition with no significant foxing or silvering loss visible (photo 1). The cast composite frame shows general wear to the gilded finish, with some darker patination in the recessed areas of the ornamentation (photo 2 and 3). The adhesive tape securing the backing board has aged and discoloured (photo 4). Minor dust accumulation is present within the ornate carvings. The hanging chain shows signs of surface oxidation and rust (photo 4).
