Lot 221:
Sold for: £12
Description
A collection of four elephant style wall masks and plaques in various materials and decorative styles. The group includes two polychrome carved wooden masks representing Ganesha. One wooden mask features a tiered headdress in red, yellow, and green over an antiqued cream face with red eye accents, while the other is finished in a bold red with blue, yellow, and green details and three eyes. The lot also includes two ceramic style plaques: one depicting a naturalistic elephant head with a sage green glaze and brown accents, and another modern style plaque featuring a crackle-glaze finish in a cream tone with an elongated trunk and long ears. The reverse of the ceramic naturalistic plaque bears several handwritten marks including ‘3’, ‘7949’, ‘2/4’, and ‘bmbs’, and it is constructed with a hollow back and a single mounting hole. The three remaining pieces have flat backs finished in black paint and are fitted with metal hanging loops for wall mounting.
Condition report:
The collection shows general surface wear consistent with decorative use. The naturalistic ceramic plaque (photo 6) has visible crazing to the glaze and a noticeable repair to the right-hand tusk (photo 6). The crackle-glaze plaque (photo 4) features significant surface crazing, which appears to be a deliberate design feature, along with minor scuffing to the edges. The two wooden masks (photos 2 and 8) show minor paint chips and surface wear, particularly to the protruding edges of the ears and trunks.
