Description
A framed watercolor painting on paper depicting a historical scene at the Tithe Barn at Torre Abbey, Devon, also known as the Spanish Barn. The illustrative composition shows a variety of figures in medieval style dress, including monks in white habits, laborers re-thatching the roof from a tall ladder, and individuals tending to livestock and a horse-drawn cart loaded with sacks. The setting includes a secondary thatched building and a coastal vista in the distance. The work is signed with the initials RB in the lower-left corner. The painting is housed in a cream mount and a decorative gilt-effect frame featuring a beaded inner border. The verso features a handwritten label that reads THE TITHE BARN AT TORRE ABBEY. (KNOWN AS THE SPANISH BARN) w/c £240. Condition report:
The watercolor is in good condition with no visible signs of foxing or paper loss (photo 1). The colors remain clear with no significant fading evident. The cream mount shows slight toning or darkening around the inner edges where it meets the painting (photo 4). The decorative gilt frame is structurally sound with minor superficial wear to the outer edges consistent with handling (photo 3). The reverse backing board is secured and shows no major damage, though the hanging cord is aged (photo 5).
