Description
A large reproduction oil on canvas painting depicting a bustling Parisian street scene, set on the Rue de Rivoli as indicated by a blue street sign. The composition features two elegantly dressed women in late 19th-century attire purchasing flowers from a street vendor’s cart. The work is executed in an academic style with impressionistic touches, showing fine detail in the figures and costume contrasted with broader brushstrokes in the background architecture and pavement. The painting is signed J. Middeleer in dark red pigment to the lower right corner.
The canvas is housed in a large, ornate gilt wood and plaster frame with a linen-covered slip. The verso of the work features a modern wooden stretcher with keys. Condition report:
The painting is in good overall condition. The canvas remains well-tensioned on its stretcher with no visible signs of restoration, paint loss, or craquelure (photo 1). The frame shows minor wear and some darkening to the gilding consistent with age, but remains structurally sound (photo 4). A light layer of surface dust is present.
