Lot 191:
Description
A Chinese style wall-hanging decorative shelf featuring a tripartite backboard and a fabric-covered ledge. The item is constructed with a wooden frame, fully upholstered in a deep burgundy fabric. The fabric is decorated with a gold-tone trellis pattern featuring small embroidered fleur-de-lis motifs at each intersection. The backboard is shaped with four rounded, scalloped peaks. Inset into the backboard are three circular decorative plates made of bamboo or light-colored wood. Each plate depicts traditional Chinese female figures (Meiren) in garden and terrace settings, accompanied by vertical Chinese characters. The horizontal shelf ledge is finished with a gold-tone textile fringe and a twisted-rope style wooden molding at the base. A metal hook is attached to the underside on the far left.
Condition report:
The upholstery on the horizontal shelf shows significant staining and dark discoloration in the centre area (photo 1). The left-hand edge of the backboard is missing a section of the decorative fabric trim, exposing an uneven profile (photo 1). There is fraying and partial detachment of the gold-tone fringe at the right-hand corner of the shelf (photo 1). Dust accumulation is visible across the fabric surfaces and within the grooves of the lower decorative molding.
