Description

A collection of decorative household items including a pair of Japanese style porcelain Satsuma vases and a mahogany-stained wooden banjo-style barometer. The two vases feature a baluster form with long necks, decorated in an orange-to-cream gradient ground with polychrome and gilt scenes of birds amongst bamboo and cherry blossoms. The neck of each vase is finished with a textured moriage style band depicting floral motifs. The barometer is set within a dark wood frame and incorporates an alcohol thermometer with scales in both Celsius and Fahrenheit, alongside a silvered aneroid dial featuring an ‘SB’ monogram. The dial is printed with weather indicators including ‘Stormy’, ‘Rain’, ‘Change’, ‘Fair’, and ‘Very Dry’, and bears the printed marks ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ and ‘BRITISH PAT. APPLIED FOR’. The lot further comprises three oil lamps: a large example with an amber glass reservoir on a cast metal foliate base, a small milk glass lamp with a yellow-tinted glass shade, and a miniature ceramic lamp with floral decoration fitted with a two-pin European style power plug.

Measurements:
Vase Height: 31 cm
Barometer Length: 51.5 cm.

Condition report:

The collection shows general signs of age throughout. One porcelain vase has a significant vertical crack extending downwards from the rim into the neck (photo 3). The second vase appears intact with no visible cracks. The wooden frame of the barometer exhibits minor surface abrasions and dust accumulation. The amber glass oil lamp chimney is present and appears undamaged, though the metal components show some surface oxidation. The miniature ceramic lamp shows some discolouration to the cord and plug. Functionality of the barometer and electrical components has not been tested.
