Description

A collection of two large personal photograph albums and scrapbooks containing a collection of photographs, newspaper clippings, and ephemera, predominantly focused on the maritime, aviation, and local history of the West Country, UK. The albums are housed in red covers; one features a gold-tooled fleur-de-lis pattern and the other is a plain red finish with gold-tooled borders.

The contents document local history from the early 20th century to 2012, with a focus on the 1970s and 1980s. Maritime subjects include the Italian naval training ship Amerigo Vespucci (dated 1979), a coaster sinking at Bovisand (1984), and the PS Waverley paddle steamer in Ilfracombe (1988). Aviation pages feature RNAS Yeovilton air displays (1984-1985) with the Avro Vulcan and Concorde. Local history is documented through the Devon County Show (1980), the Plymouth Lord Mayor’s Day parade (1983), and redevelopment of Devonport (2009-2012).

The albums utilise self-adhesive pages with plastic overlays. Numerous pages feature handwritten captions on adhesive labels in red and black ink. One album contains a promotional flyer for a Westminster Orders print titled ‘Perfect Timing’ alongside air show photography. Historical group shots include the Bowls Club Victoria (1920) and a YMCA tent (1914).

Condition report:

The albums show typical signs of age including yellowing to the adhesive page surfaces and light wear to the cover edges (photo 1). Several plastic overlays show creasing and undulation (photos 2, 5, and 10). A few adhesive labels show signs of lifting or discolouration at the edges (photo 4). The internal pages show light toning consistent with age, particularly visible on the early 20th-century reproductions (photo 5).
