Lot 170:
Description
A collection of decorative metalware and domestic curios, predominantly featuring cast brass novelty items. The group includes several figural brass pieces: a huntsman with a hound on a naturalistic base, a bird perched upon a gnarled branch, a terrier emerging from a boot, and a miniature birdhouse. Practical curios in the lot comprise a Victorian style lace-up boot, a miniature flat iron with scrolling handle, a pointing hand paperweight with a green felted base, and various miniature clogs.
The collection further includes a circular lidded wooden box with an inlaid floral and avian scene to the lid, a tall African style carved dark wood or resin female figurine, and a small owl perched on a rocky outcrop. A woven wire basket with a swing handle and a small silver-toned cottage model are also present. No maker’s marks or signatures were visible on the items at the time of cataloguing.
Condition report:
The brass items exhibit a varied natural patina with surface oxidation and tarnish throughout (photo 1). Some verdigris is visible in the interior of the miniature barrel and the boot (photo 2). The inlaid wooden box shows minor surface wear to the lid decoration (photo 1). The green felt on the base of the pointing hand is intact but displays minor signs of age and thinning at the edges (photo 3). The wire basket shows some slight misshaping to the rim consistent with use (photo 4).
