Description

A collection of pottery and ceramic animal figurines and novelty items, primarily of English manufacture. The group includes two piggy banks: a large stylized elephant finished in a dark brown glaze, incised to the base with Fosters Pottery Cornwall England 6607 and bearing a Fosters South West adhesive foil label; and a brown-glazed pig with a gold-toned foil label for Dartmouth Pottery Devon. The assortment features several lidded containers, including a honey pot or biscuit barrel shaped as a thatched cottage with a braided handle, bearing a partially legible blue circular stamp reading P… Hand Painted; a honey-brown glazed jar in the form of a pipe-smoking bear in a waistcoat; and a large yellow-glazed hen on nest tureen, impressed to the base with N O M N A R and H M C. Animal figures include two black-glazed chimpanzees, one stamped England to the foot; a large realistic tortoise with a textured shell; several smaller tortoises including two with blue and brown glazed patterns, one of which is impressed to the base with Wade Porcelain Made in England; a walrus with white tusks; and two seals. The lot also includes two dark-coloured cast-resin or composite bird figures and a group of miniature animal ornaments including a giraffe and dogs.

Condition report:

A visible fracture and repair is evident on the foot of one chimpanzee figurine (photo 8). One medium-sized Wade tortoise shows a significant break with loss to a front flipper, exposing the unglazed ceramic body (photo 9, 10). The thatched cottage novelty jar displays extensive fine crazing to the glaze on the base (photo 6). General surface wear and minor scuffing consistent with age are visible across several pieces in the collection.
