Lot 114:
Description
A collection of carved hardwood elephant figurines in various sizes and postures. The group is crafted from a dark, dense wood, possibly ebony, with a polished finish throughout. The figurines depict elephants in walking and standing positions, with several examples featuring trunks raised in a traditional style. The collection includes a variety of anatomical details, from smooth, stylised forms to pieces with incised lines representing skin folds. One notable figure features an elaborate carved headdress and caparison decoration. Many pieces are inset with white tusks, possibly made of bone or bovine horn. The lot includes a range of scales, from large adult figures to smaller calves, creating a tiered group. No manufacturer marks or signatures are visible on the figurines.
Condition report:
The collection is in fair to good overall condition. Several figures are missing one or both tusks, including the large elephant on the far left of the group and several smaller calves (photo 1). There are visible surface scuffs and small chips consistent with handling, particularly to the ears and trunks of the smaller figures (photo 3). A general accumulation of dust is present within the carved recesses across the collection. One elephant bears a pink adhesive lot label to its back (photo 3).
