Description
A vintage workshop technical manual binder issued by Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd. The lot comprises a red-covered five-ring metal binder containing a collection of individual lubrication and maintenance specification sheets for various passenger cars. The sheets feature technical chassis and engine diagrams, oil grade charts, and service interval summaries. The front index page is titled INDEX (July 1955) (Cancelling all previous issues) PASSENGER CARS. Each page carries the yellow and red Shell pecten logo and the SHELLUBRICATION SERVICE crest. Notable models documented within include the Fiat New 1100 Model 103 (Sheet No. X701), Humber Hawk Mk’s IV and V (Sheet No. X570), and the MG Midget Series TD and TF (Sheet No. X573, 2nd Revision). The index lists numerous other marques such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Bristol, and Alfa-Romeo. The lower border of each sheet features the slogan LEADERSHIP IN LUBRICATION. Printer reference codes including PC700 SS298 and PC694 SS143/D are visible in the lower margins.
Condition report:
The binder and contents show significant age-related wear consistent with heavy workshop use. The red exterior binder shows scuffing, loss of colour at the edges, and surface staining (photo 1). The internal pages exhibit pervasive yellowing, tanning, and multiple grease and oil smudges, particularly around the edges and punch holes (photos 2-4). The top right corner of the index page is heavily worn with significant paper loss (photo 1). Some creasing and small tears are present around the metal rings. The metal ring mechanism shows surface oxidation but remains functional.
