Description

A mid-20th century wooden step ladder constructed from a combination of pine and hardwood components. This lot comprises a single folding ladder featuring a hinged A-frame structure and flat, grooved rungs for traction. The timber stiles are joined to the rungs by a combination of mortise-and-tenon joints and slotted screws, typical of domestic and industrial utility furniture from the period. The ladder is fitted with a hinged metal support rail at the top. The stiles bear a natural aged finish and show signs of heavy use with significant white and grey paint splashes across the woodwork. A white rectangular paper label is present on the upper section of the stile, although the characters are not legible and do not identify a maker. A yellow adhesive label reading Q1 is also present on one of the lower rungs.

Condition report:

The ladder shows extensive surface wear consistent with age and heavy utility use. There are significant and widespread paint splatters in white and grey tones across the rungs and stiles (photo 1). The metal support rail exhibits oxidation and surface rust throughout its length (photo 1). The timber shows overall staining, surface abrasions, and minor losses to the edges of the stiles (photo 2). Structural joints appear intact, though the surface finish is heavily weathered (photo 3).
