Description

A pair of Southeast Asian style hand-carved hardwood relief panels, possibly made of teak. Each panel features intricate openwork decoration in a traditional ‘Kranok’ floral scrollwork style with polychrome pigment accents in shades of red, green, and gold. One panel depicts a larger harnessed elephant pulling a log, characteristic of traditional logging scenes, while the other features two smaller elephants amidst dense foliate and floral motifs. The carvings utilize an ajoure technique, creating a pierced, three-dimensional effect. The reverse of the panels displays a hand-hewn finish, revealing the natural grain and fissures of the wood. A small white adhesive label is present on the front lower right of one panel (photo 3) bearing the printed characters ‘S702C’. No manufacturer marks or signatures are visible on either piece. Small metal hanging loops are attached to the upper edges of both panels.

Condition report:

Both panels are in good overall condition with typical age-related characteristics. Minor scuffs and surface wear to the polychrome pigments are visible, particularly on the raised edges and extremities (photo 1 and 2). The reverse of one panel shows natural grain irregularities and fissures inherent to the timber (photo 4). One metal hanging loop appears slightly bent (photo 4).
