Lot 69:
Sold for: £44
Description
A set of ten glazed earthenware fireplace tiles manufactured by Stovax. This lot comprises two identical five-tile runs designed to form continuous pictorial friezes, typically utilised for the side cheeks of a Victorian style fireplace insert. The naturalistic decoration features a wetland landscape scene moving from left to right through tall grasses, a yellow bird, a larger bird resembling a bearded reedling, bulrushes against water, and yellow water lilies with a swallowtail butterfly. The scene is framed by a repeating stylised foliate border in blue and white. The reverse of the tiles bears an impressed rectangular mark reading STOVAX MADE IN ENGLAND, flanked by the numbers 96 and 20.
Condition report:
The tiles appear to be in good, unused condition with no visible cracks or surface chips to the glazed faces (photos 1 and 2). Minor nibbles and typical production roughness are visible on the unglazed edges and corners, as seen in the detail of the reverse (photo 4). The decoration and glaze remain bright and intact across both sets.
