Lot 45:
Sold for: £42
Description
This lot comprises a pair of two ceramic match strikers and a single small preserve pot. The matching strikers feature a spherical upper section with a textured cream-coloured “sandpaper” surface designed for lighting matches. These holders sit upon a flared base finished in cobalt blue glaze with a cream outer rim. The upper rim of each holder is printed in black with the text ‘COATES’ ORIGINAL PLYMOUTH GIN.’ and the base rim reads ‘ORIGINAL PLYMOUTH GIN. COATES & CO.’. The underside of each striker bears a green printed backstamp within a scroll reading ‘LATE FOLEY’, ‘SHELLEY’, and ‘ENGLAND’, alongside a hand-painted brown reference number ‘7980’ over a ‘v’.
The accompanying preserve pot is constructed from terra cotta with a cream slip exterior, decorated with a row of blue hand-painted dots and the script ‘Sweeten pot’. The interior and top rim are finished in a brown glaze. The unglazed base carries a black rectangular stamp reading ‘WATCOMBE’ over ‘TORQUAY’.
Condition report:
Both match strikers exhibit significant surface crazing throughout the blue and cream glazes (photo 1). The textured strike surfaces show dark grey discoloration and staining from use (photo 2). The preserve pot displays crazing to the interior and exterior cream slip (photo 1). A small chip is visible on the upper brown-glazed rim of the preserve pot (photo 1). No other chips or cracks are evident to the rims or bases of the strikers.
