Description

A collection of vintage woodworking hand planes, comprising bench planes, block planes, and a rebate plane. The group includes a Stanley No. 78 Duplex Filletster and Rebate plane, constructed from cast iron with a black japanned finish, housed in its original orange cardboard box. The box bears an adhesive white label reading M1282W and includes original paperwork detailing the model as No. 78. Also present is an Acorn smoothing plane featuring a red-painted cast iron body and wooden handles, with the maker’s name ACORN cast into the lever cap.

The collection further includes a metal-bodied infill smoothing plane with a brass lever cap and dark hardwood infill, possibly rosewood. Its steel iron is stamped with a palm tree device and text reading MAWHOOD SHEFFIELD. Several small block planes are included, with one featuring a black and yellow decal on the lever cap reading MADE IN ENG and STANLEY, and another with SARGENT cast into the toe. A larger cast iron jack plane with a wooden tote is also present in the background.

Condition report:

The collection is in workshop-found condition, showing signs of heavy use and age-related wear throughout. The Stanley No. 78 box is heavily distressed with structural damage and torn edges (photo 2). Most items exhibit significant surface oxidation and heavy rust, particularly to the soles and irons (photo 1 and 4). The red-painted Acorn plane shows substantial paint loss (photo 3), and the Mawhood iron on the infill plane is heavily pitted (photo 4). All wooden components show surface wear and minor scuffs commensurate with age.
