Description
A Royal Doulton Burslem ceramic mantel clock with a separate matching ceramic plinth or stand. The clock case is constructed from glazed earthenware featuring a multi-coloured flow glaze, with deep cobalt blue at the crown transitioning through mahogany brown to a cream-coloured ground at the base. The front panel is decorated with a classical scene of three figures in a rural landscape, likely a transfer print with hand-tinted details. The case further features moulded Rococo-style scrollwork with gilt accents and integrated handles. The circular brass dial has an embossed floral centre and individual raised cartouches for the black Arabic numerals, protected by a domed glass crystal in a beaded metal bezel. To the rear is a circular brass-cased mechanical movement with winding arbors and a central adjustment screw. The underside of the base bears a brown printed backstamp consisting of a lion standing upon a crown within a circular wreath, with the word ‘ENGLAND’ below. This mark identifies the piece as a product of the Royal Doulton factory in Burslem.
Condition report:
The ceramic surfaces of both the clock and stand exhibit extensive fine crazing throughout the glaze (photo 1). Small losses to the gilding are visible on the moulded scrollwork of the clock case (photo 2). A significant horizontal crack and a repaired area are present across the blue ceramic tray portion of the associated stand (photo 3). Minor oxidation is visible on the rear brass movement cover (photo 5). The clock is untested and a winding key is not present.
