Description

This lot comprises two framed needlework pictures executed in silk thread. The first is a landscape embroidery on a pale silk ground, depicting a rustic country scene featuring a thatched cottage, a gnarled tree, birds in flight, and a swan upon a stream. The work utilises a variety of embroidery stitches to create texture in the foliage and architectural details. It is housed in a dark wood frame with a wide gilt-finish slip. The second piece is an embroidery on a pinkish-purple silk ground depicting a pair of rabbits, one black and one white, amongst stylised foliage. This work is presented in a thin gilt-metal frame. A pencil inscription on the backing paper of the smaller picture reads ‘Embroidered by Miss Pitts Yelverton 1930’s ?’.

The larger landscape picture frame measures 60 cm in height. The smaller rabbit picture frame measures 36 cm in width.

Condition report:

The landscape embroidery shows visible rippling to the silk support and some general discoloration consistent with age (photo 1). The verso of this piece displays significant water staining to the brown backing paper, particularly around the central area (photo 5). The rabbit embroidery exhibits minor rippling and some localized foxing or staining to the pinkish silk ground (photo 4). The backing paper of the rabbit piece shows age-related toning and minor edge wear (photo 6). No losses to the needlework threads are visible in the photographs.
