Description

This lot comprises two English decorative ceramic vases. The first is a Fielding’s Devon Lustre vase of bottle form featuring a long neck and flared rim. The body is decorated with an iridescent purple and blue “lustrine” glaze, accented with gilded butterfly motifs and foliate sprays. The base carries a printed gold backstamp featuring a crown above the words DEVON LUSTRINE, FIELDING’S, STOKE-ON-TRENT, MADE IN ENGLAND, and the word SUMMER, accompanied by the hand-painted green number 27. The second item is a small bulbous porcelain vase featuring a reticulated, pierced neck and a flared, scalloped rim. The body is hand-painted with a bird, possibly a bullfinch, amongst wildflowers including cornflowers and poppies, and bears the hand-painted signature G. Lewis. The underside displays a green printed globe mark containing the text LOCKE & CO LTD, SHRUB HILL WORKS, WORCESTER, and ENGLAND, with an impressed number 921.

Fielding’s vase height: 8.5 inches
Locke & Co. vase height: 3.5 inches.

Condition report:

The Fielding\'s vase shows light surface wear to the gilded butterfly and foliate decoration. The Locke & Co. Worcester vase has significant damage and a poorly executed adhesive repair around the join of the flared rim to the reticulated neck, with a visible vertical crack extending through the rim.
