Description

A large hand knotted Persian style wool rug, featuring a vibrant crimson red field decorated with a central lobed medallion in shades of cream, navy, and light blue. The field is further adorned with detached floral sprays and scrolling vine motifs. The composition is enclosed within a wide navy blue main border displaying repeating floral shrub designs, flanked by multiple guard stripes including a prominent ochre guard border. The rug is constructed with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, showing a double-warped weave typical of urban production centers. The reverse reveals a relatively high knot density, and the cotton warp threads extend to form the fringe at both ends.

Length: 310 cm (approximately 122 inches) including fringe.
Width: 208 cm (approximately 82 inches).

Condition report:

The rug shows signs of moderate wear consistent with age and domestic use. There is visible pile wear in the central field where the foundation is beginning to show in small patches (photo 6). The selvedges exhibit fraying and loss of overcasting stitch in several places (photo 2). The cotton fringe is worn, uneven, and shows significant losses at both ends (photo 7). A visible crease line runs across the width near one end (photo 4). General surface soiling is present throughout, and the rug would benefit from professional cleaning.
