Lot 369:
Description
A pair of framed prints under glass comprising two distinct subjects. The first is an offset lithograph on paper after John Piper, titled ‘St. Mary le Port, Bristol, 1940’. The architectural scene depicts ruined gothic arches in a palette of ochre, terracotta, and deep browns with black gestural outlines. It is inscribed in yellow to the lower right ‘John Piper’. The print is housed in a contemporary gold-toned metallic frame. The second work is a print on paper depicting a Romanesque style religious mural of Christ in Majesty (Pantocrator) within a mandorla, surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists. Latin inscriptions are visible in the borders, including ‘JOHANNES’ and ‘AVILA’. This piece is set within a decorative black fluted frame featuring gold-toned circular rosettes at the corners.
Condition report:
Both prints appear in good condition behind glass with no visible tears or foxing (photo 1, photo 2). The frames show minor surface wear and light scuffing consistent with handling; the Piper frame has a small nick on the lower edge (photo 3). Reflections from overhead lighting are present on the glass in both photographs but do not represent damage to the artworks.
