Description

A collection of joinery tools previously belonging to a single tradesman. The lot is housed in a large black-painted wooden tool chest and a smaller ribbed metal toolbox. The wooden chest features a mahogany-lined interior with multiple drawers fitted with light blue turned wooden pulls. Both the wooden chest and the metal box are inscribed with stencilled white lettering reading C. FRY over JOINER.

The collection comprises a variety of hand tools including hand saws, tenon saws, and a coping saw. One saw is marked with an orange label reading SWEDISH HARDPOINT BLADE. Drilling equipment includes a blue-painted hand crank breast drill, a wooden brace, and a set of drill bits in a canvas roll. Striking and shaping tools comprise a large wooden joiner’s mallet, numerous chisels and gouges with turned wooden handles, several wood files or rasps, and a spokeshave. Measuring and layout instruments include a folding wooden rule, a marking gauge, and metal dividers. Additional workshop items included are sharpening stones in wooden boxes, a box of ARALDITE Rapid adhesive, 3M sandpaper rolls, and a box of STAEDTLER pencils.

Condition report:

The items are in used workshop condition. The black wooden chest shows significant scuffing, paint loss, and surface grime across the exterior (photo 1). The interior mahogany drawers appear well-preserved but show minor surface wear consistent with tool storage (photo 3). The metal toolbox exhibits heavy oxidation and surface rust throughout its exterior (photo 1). The tools show varying degrees of surface corrosion, particularly on the metal blades of the saws and chisels (photos 2 and 4). Wooden tool handles show signs of wear and age-related darkening. The working order of the mechanical drills has not been tested.
