Description
A collection of brass, copper, and cast iron fireside accessories primarily dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The group features a large, tapered cylindrical brass coal scuttle with a fixed overhead handle and side tipping handle, alongside a helmet-shaped copper scuttle set on a brass pedestal base. This copper scuttle is decorated with blue and white Delft style ceramic grips to the overhead and rear handles, which are secured with brass rivets including one cast lion’s mask. The assortment also includes a brass companion set on a circular stand, comprising a shovel, tongs, and a hearth brush. Additional fireplace tools consist of a pair of wrought iron tongs with a brass finial, a long wooden-handled poker, and a small brass hand shovel. The domestic metalware is completed by a small cast iron sad iron painted green with a black wooden handle and a decorative cast iron trivet featuring a geometric openwork pattern. No maker’s marks or manufacturer labels are visible on any of the items.
Condition report:
The metal surfaces show significant oxidation, tarnish, and surface scratching consistent with age and heavy use. Green verdigris is visible to the interior of the copper scuttle (photo 2) and soot accumulation is present inside the brass scuttle (photo 1). The blue and white ceramic handles appear intact but exhibit fine surface crazing (photo 2). The hearth brush bristles are notably worn and splayed (photo 1). Chipped paint and surface rust are evident on the cast iron sad iron and trivet (photo 4).
