Description

A collection of international banknotes and UK coinage from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The paper currency includes three banknotes from the People’s Bank of China and two from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. The Chinese notes feature a purple 5 Yuan note (2005) with serial number AT94123108, a blue-grey 10 Yuan note (2005) with serial number BT21035609, and a green 1 Yuan note (1999) with serial number UT83575382. These notes display portraits of Mao Zedong on the obverse and various landscapes including the Three Gorges on the reverse. The Sri Lankan currency comprises an orange 100 Rupee note (2010.01.01) with serial number U/110 207594 depicting a hydroelectric plant and a blue 50 Rupee note (2010.01.01) with serial number V/7 189462 depicting a bridge.

The coinage consists of two United Kingdom pieces including a bronze-coloured pre-decimal One Penny featuring a seated Britannia and a smaller cupro-nickel decimal 5 Pence piece. Both coins bear the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The banknotes are printed on paper with visible watermarks and security threads where applicable.

Condition report:

The collection shows signs of moderate circulation throughout. The banknotes exhibit visible vertical and horizontal creases, soft corners, and minor edge wear (photo 1). The 10 Yuan note shows more pronounced handling marks and slight discolouration to the margins (photo 2). The UK One Penny displays significant surface oxidation and even brown toning consistent with age (photo 1, bottom). The 5 Pence coin shows light surface contact marks and minor scratches (photo 2, bottom). No significant tears or pinholes are immediately visible.
