Description
A Cornish serpentine model of an ecclesiastical font, likely dating to the late 19th century. The piece is constructed from variegated stone, featuring a dark green matrix with prominent red and lighter green inclusions throughout. The form comprises an octagonal top section containing a shallow circular basin, supported by a central column and three peripheral turned pillars. These rest upon a tiered circular and octagonal base. The underside of the base shows evidence of a previous adhesive or felt backing and lacks any visible maker’s marks, signatures, or retailer labels. The architectural design is characteristic of miniature fonts produced in the Lizard Peninsula region of Cornwall.
Condition report:
The stone surfaces exhibit scattered scratches and minor surface wear consistent with age (photo 1). There are several small nibbles and minor losses to the sharp edges of the octagonal basin and the base (photo 2). One of the peripheral pillars shows a natural vein or surface hairline, though remains structurally sound (photo 4). The underside of the base displays significant loss of original polish and substantial residue from an old felt or adhesive backing (photo 5).
