Lot 203:
Sold for: £14
Description
A collection of elephant wall plaques and figurines carved from various woods including teak and mahogany styles. The group features several examples mounted on oval or shield-shaped wooden backplates for wall hanging, alongside freestanding sculptural heads. The carvings exhibit a range of artistic interpretations from representational forms with detailed skin textures to smooth, minimalist designs. Many pieces incorporate inset white tusks possibly made from bone, plastic, or light-coloured wood. One central figure appears to be carved from a mottled pinkish stone or heavy composite material. A plaque positioned on the right of the group features the incised characters GAL to the lower right of the backplate, though no definitive maker’s name is readable.
Condition report:
The collection shows varying states of preservation consistent with age and grouped storage. Several figurines and plaques are missing tusks, notably two examples in the foreground of photo 1. Visible surface wear, dust accumulation, and light scratches are present across the lot. The stone or composite elephant head shows significant surface abrasion and loss of crisp detail to the centre (photo 1 and 3). Some larger plaques exhibit small chips to the ear edges and evidence of previous repairs.
