Description
A collection of British and Commonwealth military insignia, badges, and uniform buttons, primarily of gilded brass and metal construction. The group features a large gilded brass Royal Marines cap badge with a white metal or silver-toned globe set within a laurel wreath, surmounted by a crown. The assortment includes numerous Australian military uniform buttons of various sizes, typically featuring the King’s Crown over the Rising Sun badge, with some bearing the relief inscription AUSTRALIA. One large four-hole brass button is impressed to the reverse with the maker’s name STOKES AND SONS MELB.
The collection further comprises an enamel shield-shaped club badge inscribed ELY VALLEY 1928-1978 BOWLS CLUB, a Royal British Legion enamel lapel badge, and two small brass officer rank stars. Other items include a black composition fouled anchor button and various military style buttons featuring the Royal Coat of Arms. The lot is presented with a circular metallic storage tin.
Condition report:
The collection shows varied age-related wear across the pieces. The Royal Marines cap badge exhibits significant loss to the silvered finish on the central globe (photo 1). The brass buttons show general surface oxidation and a natural aged patina throughout. Several buttons appear to be missing their reverse shank loops or have bent attachment pins (photo 2). The enamel on the Ely Valley and British Legion badges remains largely intact with only minor surface scratches visible. The storage tin shows some surface tarnishing and carries a handwritten adhesive paper label.
