Description

A collection of fourteen hand-coloured prints depicting various characters and scenes from Charles Dickens’s The Pickwick Papers. The lot comprises fourteen individual works, each featuring a central hand-coloured illustration, possibly wood engravings or lithographs, finished with watercolour washes. The subjects include Mr. Pickwick, Sam Weller, and other figures in comedic scenarios such as ice skating, dining, and travelling. Each print is mounted in a cream-coloured mat board featuring a black-and-gold ink-ruled border and a printed italicised caption at the bottom.

Several illustrations bear a small monogram signature in the lower corner consisting of the intertwined letters ‘S’ and ‘R’. Printed captions include: ‘In which Mr. Pickwick thinks he had better go to Bath and goes Accordingly’, ‘”Now then, sir,” said Sam, “off with you, and show ’em how to do it”‘, ‘A little old gentleman in a suit of snuff-coloured clothes’, ‘A cold collation of an Abernethy biscuit and a saveloy’, ‘”Take your hat off”‘, ‘”Is there anybody here, named Sam?”‘, and ‘”The happiness of young people,” said Mr. Pickwick, a little moved, “has ever been the chief pleasure of my life”‘. The prints are housed in modern plastic protective sleeves.

Condition report:

The collection shows significant age-related toning across all mat boards, visible in all photographs. Noticeable moisture staining and tidemarking are present on the lower edges and corners of multiple mats, particularly evident in the overview (photo 1) and the \'Abernethy biscuit\' print (photo 5). Foxing spots and localized staining are visible on the matting of several pieces (photos 2, 4, and 5). The print paper itself shows varying degrees of light toning consistent with age. There are minor undulations to the paper within the mats. No frames are present.
