Description

A collection of three vintage hats comprising two gentlemen’s felt hats and one lady’s feather hat. The gentlemen’s selection includes a grey felt top hat and a black felt bowler hat, both size 7 1/8. The grey top hat features a matching grosgrain ribbon band and bound brim, with an interior white lining and leather sweatband stamped 7 1/8. It is marked to the interior crown with a rectangular label reading YOUNG’S formal wear. The black felt bowler hat is lined with a decorative black and white checked fabric and a white silk-style crown lining bearing a label for Simpson PICCADILLY The Chequer. A gold-tone script label on the sweatband reads Tress & Co, and a paper tag identifies the piece as size 7 1/8, J S S, MODEL 1, BLACK. The set is accompanied by a black vulcanised fibre travel case with metal corner protectors and a central leather handle, printed with the Young’s logo and containing a handwritten card for Mr. J. E. Hunt. The lady’s millinery consists of a pink-dyed feather hat in a swirling pillbox style with a flared plume, lined in off-white buckram with no visible maker’s marks.

Condition report:

The grey top hat shows heavy surface pilling, overall soiling, and significant staining to the felt exterior (photo 3). The black bowler hat exhibits surface dust and interior staining to the lining (photo 4). The travel case has scuffing to the body and oxidation to the metal hardware (photo 1). The pink feather hat has heavy brown age-related staining and foxing throughout the interior lining (photo 6).
