Lot 62:
Description
A pair of portable hand lanterns in the Bardic style, likely for industrial or railway use. Each unit is constructed with a cast metal housing finished in grey paint and features an integrated D-shaped carry handle. The front of each lamp is fitted with a circular glass lens protected by a thick, black rubberised bezel. The lanterns are equipped with black plastic slide switches on the side and a star-shaped adjustment knob on the top.
On the left-hand lantern, the letters B.R. are cast in relief on the side casing. The right-hand lantern features a cast mark reading CHLORIDE S 5 2 B and PAT 910425. The rear of one unit is fitted with a metal mounting plate containing two keyhole-shaped apertures for wall hanging. Accompanying the lanterns are two metallic keys with black inserts, each bearing the number 237. These lanterns were commonly utilised by guards and footplate staff on the British railway network.
Condition report:
Both lanterns exhibit significant surface wear consistent with professional industrial use. There is widespread scuffing, paint loss, and visible spots of oxidation to the metal casings, particularly around the rivets and base edges (photo 2). The rubber bezels show some accumulation of dust and minor perishing but remain intact (photo 1). The mounting plate on the rear of the left lantern shows some bending and surface rust at the bottom edge (photo 3). The interior functionality and battery compartments have not been inspected.
