Lot 180:
Description
A collection of ceramic tableware and decorative stoneware. The lot includes a group of Midwinter pottery in the Spanish Garden pattern, designed by Jessie Tait. This set features stylized blue floral decoration with green foliage transfer-printed on white earthenware bodies. Marked to the bases of the plates is a black printed stamp reading: “SPANISH GARDEN”, “DESIGN BY JESSIE TAIT”, “Midwinter”, “FINE TABLEWARE”, “STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND”, “SHAPES DESIGNED BY THE”, “MARQUIS OF QUEENSBERRY”. Included are various dinner and side plates, bowls, a teapot, a lidded tureen, and serving pieces.
Also present is a collection of decorative ceramics and breweriana. This includes a dark green glazed figural jug in the form of an open-mouthed fish, with raised lettering around the base reading “PLYMOUTH GIN”. Two bell-shaped ceramic whisky decanters are included; the larger bears a base mark reading “WADE”, “BELL’S SCOTCH WHISKY”, “PERTH SCOTLAND” and labels reading “BELL’S Old Scotch Whisky”. The lot further comprises several stoneware items: a small bottle printed “GINGER BEER HISCOMBE PLYMOUTH”, a handled flagon with cork, and two large salt-glazed storage jars. A boxed set of three small teardrop-shaped vases marked “PREKÄR” completes the assortment.
Condition report:
The Midwinter tableware appears in good overall condition with no visible chips or cracks. The Bell\'s whisky decanters show the ceramic stoppers as detached; the larger decanter exhibits some rubbing and loss to the gold-tone finish on the base rim (photo 3). The stoneware jars and flagon show surface pitting and minor irregularities characteristic of salt-glaze manufacture and age-related wear. The Plymouth Gin jug and boxed vases show no visible damage.
