Lot 119:
Description
A vintage armillary sphere garden sundial constructed from cast metal, possibly iron or heavy patinated bronze. The piece features a traditional spherical form with a central arrow gnomon and an equatorial band. The equatorial band is decorated with raised Roman numerals representing the hours of the day, specifically reading I, I, I, I, V, V, I, V, I, I, V, I, I, I, I, X, X, I, X, I, I, X, I, I, I. The assembly is mounted upon a circular cast metal base which shows remnants of a blue-tinted finish or copper-oxide verdigris. The frame is finished with a dark brown and black weathered patina consistent with outdoor display. No maker’s marks, signatures, or branding are legible on the base or frame.
Height: 39.5 cm.
Condition report:
The item shows significant signs of weathering and oxidation throughout the frame and base (photo 1). There is heavy surface pitting and a dark, uneven patina consistent with long-term exposure to the elements. The equatorial band appears slightly misaligned or bent at one of the junction points (photo 3). The circular base exhibits heavy wear to the blue finish with significant areas of surface corrosion and verdigris (photo 2).
