Lot 106:
Description
A collection of elephant figurines primarily carved from dark, dense hardwoods such as ebony or ebonised hardwood. This group includes an assortment of individual figures in various sizes and poses, including standing, walking, and figures with trunks raised. Notable pieces within the collection include a high-relief carved wooden wall plaque depicting a walking elephant and a pair of bookends featuring stylised elephant head carvings. One figure is carved from a lighter reddish-brown wood, and a small figure appears to be carved from a mottled purple and grey stone, possibly fluorite or amethyst. Many of the larger wooden elephants are decorated with white inlays for the tusks and eyes, likely made from bone, plastic, or bovine horn. No manufacturer marks or signatures were observed on the items. This lot comprises the elephant figures only; the wooden shelving shown in the images is not included.
Condition report:
The collection shows signs of age and wear consistent with handling. Several figures are missing one or both inlaid tusks, including the large bookend elephant and multiple medium-sized figures (photo 1, photo 4). Surface scuffs, light scratches, and areas of wear to the dark finish are visible, particularly on the relief wall plaque and the larger standing figurines (photo 2). Dust accumulation is present in the carved recesses across many pieces in the group (photo 3).
