Description

A collection of Chinese ceramic figurines executed in the traditional Shiwan or Shekwan mudman style. The group predominantly depicts elderly male figures engaged in fishing activities, characterised by the contrasting use of unglazed, matte-finished ceramic for flesh tones and thick, colourful fluid glazes for garments and accessories. The collection includes a large figure seated atop a brown glazed barrel-shaped basket, several active poses featuring fishermen with bamboo rod slivers and small ceramic fish, and one figure representing Shoulao, the God of Longevity, identifiable by his prominent cranium and peaches. One figure is presented in a shallow terracotta-coloured dish filled with sand and shells. The garments are finished in a variety of vibrant blue, white, and ochre glazes. No manufacturer marks, signatures, or country-of-origin labels are visible on the exterior of the pieces.

Condition report:

The collection shows several signs of damage to the delicate bamboo components. One standing figure in a blue robe has a broken bamboo rod with only a short segment remaining in his hands (photo 3). A second standing figure in a turquoise robe is missing the line and fish component from his rod (photo 3). A seated figure in a white robe has a rod that appears poorly secured or replaced (photo 4). General surface dust and minor glaze wear consistent with age are visible across the group. The figure in the sand-filled tray is a composite display and the tray shows minor rim wear (photo 1).
