Description
A Victorian style musical photograph album titled The Seasons, featuring a brown leather cover with embossed and gilt-tooled floral lotus motifs. The album is secured with a brass clasp and contains thick card pages decorated with chromolithograph illustrations of seasonal allegories, including Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. The illustrations are accompanied by poetic verses and naturalistic scenes of birds, flowers, and hunting dogs. The interior features various oval and rectangular apertures for cabinet cards and cartes-de-visite, including four original portrait photographs of period subjects. A mechanical music box movement is recessed into a wooden-framed compartment at the back of the album, operated by a brass winding key on the reverse. The back cover is further detailed with an embossed star-shaped pattern and four raised brass feet. A green braided cord is attached to the upper metal loop. No manufacturer marks are visible on the musical movement or the printed pages.
Condition report:
The leather cover shows visible surface wear, scuffing, and rubbing to the edges and corners (photo 2 and 4). There is some minor loss to the gilt decoration on the front cover (photo 2). The interior pages exhibit foxing and spotting throughout, consistent with age (photo 10 and 15). Small tears and wear are visible around the edges of several photo apertures (photo 10). The brass clasp and winding key show surface tarnishing and patination (photo 3 and 5).
