Description

A collection of metalware and tableware comprising silver-plated, copper and brass items. The group includes a three-piece silver-plated tea service featuring a teapot on pedestal base, a two-handled sugar bowl and a cream jug, each decorated with repoussé floral and foliate scrolling. Also present is a silver-plated rectangular lidded entrée dish with a gadrooned border on four scrolling feet, a flower frog with a mesh grid, a lidded butter dish, and two wire-work frames with glass inserts.

The lot further includes an oval copper tray with fluted decoration and a beaded rim, which is stamped to the underside MADE IN ENGLAND, J.S&S. SOLID COPPER. A cylindrical copper caddy with embossed floral patterns on three brass ball feet bears an impressed mark reading MADE IN ENGLAND, BELDRAY, ENGLAND. A large brass charger with repoussé bosses and a green-enameled metal pitcher are also included. Small accessories comprise a pair of silver-plated ice tongs with claw-shaped ends bearing hallmarks including a G, S, and a D in separate shields, and a small spoon with a twisted stem stamped STERLING 925 alongside a trefoil maker’s mark. Two decanter labels are present: one porcelain example reading Vermouth and one pierced metal label.

Condition report:

The silver-plated tea service and serving dishes show significant tarnish and visible copper bleed, particularly to the handles and raised edges of the sugar bowl and jug (photo 2). The entrée dish lid shows surface scratching and loss of plating (photo 3). The copper items exhibit surface oxidation and verdigris, notably to the underside of the Beldray caddy (photo 5) and the fluted rim of the Joseph Sankey tray (photo 6). The ice tongs show heavy surface tarnish (photo 7). The enameled pitcher appears largely intact with minor wear to the rim and handle (photo 1). All items show signs of age and use consistent with antique provenance.
