Lot 372:
Sold for: £60
Description
A Victorian style library bookcase constructed in two sections from solid pine. The upper section features a flared cornice above two glazed doors, each housing a single clear glass pane with rounded upper corners. The interior is fitted with adjustable or fixed wooden shelving. The base unit comprises two panelled doors opening to reveal an interior divided by vertical pine partitions. The exterior is finished with a light-to-medium stain, while the interior and top surface of the lower section show the natural, unfinished state of the horizontal and vertical pine planks. Both upper and lower door sets are fitted with brass-toned metal drop-handle pulls and decorative escutcheons. The back of the unit is constructed from horizontally aligned pine boards. This lot comprises the cabinet only; the books and other interior items shown in the images are not included.
Condition report:
The bookcase shows signs of utility and age throughout. There are visible scuffs, scratches, and areas of finish wear to the exterior wood, particularly around the lower plinth and near the door handles (photo 1). The interior unfinished pine exhibits natural oxidation and some staining to the boards (photo 2). The top surface of the base section, visible in top-down views, has a significantly darker finish compared to the front face (photo 4). The glass panes appear intact without visible cracks. No manufacturer marks or labels are visible on the exterior or interior surfaces.
