Description

A group of church fixtures and textiles historically originating from Whitchurch Methodist Church. The lot comprises a pulpit fall or altar cloth, a pair of matching oak hymn boards, an informational signboard, and a framed photograph. The pulpit fall is constructed from deep blue velvet with a central monogram in gold-coloured embroidery featuring the interlaced letters IHS. The textile is finished with a gold-tone cord trim and a yellow fringe along the lower edge. The two matching hymn boards are made from oak with pierced trefoil cutouts to the arched tops and five horizontal slats for number display; each is vertically inscribed with the word HYMNS to the left of the arch.

A brass-toned informational signboard is set within a black-painted wooden frame, carrying the inscriptions WHITCHURCH METHODIST CHURCH, SUNDAY SERVICE 3.15PM, and MINISTER. A separate silver-coloured plaque attached to the lower right of the sign reads REV V. HONEY 01822 853860. The collection is completed by a framed and matted sepia photograph of a chapel interior. An oval plaque on the mount is inscribed Ebenezer Chapel Pulpit, — 1816 to 1894.

Condition report:

The blue velvet pulpit fall shows surface dust and minor pile crushing consistent with age (photo 1). The two oak hymn boards exhibit significant wear to the finish on the central sections and various surface scuffs and scratches (photo 2). The informational signboard shows heavy oxidation, tarnish, and surface pitting to the metal plate, with paint loss and scuffing to the black frame (photo 4). The framed photograph displays fading and moisture staining (foxing) to the image and mount, with substantial gesso loss and cracking to the frame (photo 3).
